Overnight Urban Hike
On 13th December,
11 of us attended the Annual Urban Night Hike organised by the YA HQ without
really knowing what to expect, since the concept of an urban hike is quite new
as most of us only participated in nature hikes before.
Based on the theme that we were all immigrants
who just arrived in Singapore in her early days, we were split into our ‘clans’
where we came up with funky clan names and cheers.

"Mehroar" introducing themselves |
The
route started from Labrador Park, to Harbourfront, Outram Park, Chinatown, and
finally concluded at Orchard Road.
|
Berlayer Creek |
After crossing Berlayer Creek, we passed by Labrador Park. It is a
historic area with the replica of the dragon teeth gate 龍牙門 and gun posts.
we then walked on a boardwalk leading to Harbourfront.
|
That walk was awesome; it felt if we were walking on water! |
As
a group, we walked and completed tasks together and filled in answers in a questionnaire on the way, as we visited and learned more about Singapore’s
historical buildings and cultural heritages. The numerous churches, mosques,
and temples visited impressed us with the richness of religion and culture that
Singapore possesses.
Finally when we reached Orchard Road, we had to
explore the malls and its decorations thoroughly in order to fill in the questionnaire given; meanwhile holding hands with each other throughout the journey as part of the mission.
The game lasted for an hour before we moved on to *SCAPE for our final
game where we had to use materials provided to build a 30cm tall tower which
was strong enough to resist damage from the "natural elements". In
other words, we could throw things at each of the towers and the last one
standing wins. Based on the points each team accumulated throughout the night
hike, the team rankings were determined. Each team received some snacks as
prizes, and we all also received a cute mini trefoil which would be out of
stock soon. *gasps* And that marked the end
of our urban night hike. (:
“Towards the end of the hike, I really felt like we have overcame the initial awkwardness and had so much fun together through the night. Although there were times of weariness, my group members were always there for me” – Xue Qi
It
was fascinating to see a different side of Singapore at night, where we could
properly appreciate its beauty without the bustling crowds and traffic, and we
are really thankful for this opportunity to bond with YAs from other chapters who share the same passion as us! :D
