29 July 2015 - Physical Recreation

Hello!

The YAs had a Physical Recreation activity on 29 July 2015 as part of our NYAA Gold. The Physical Recreation I/C, Chelsea, has planned a series of activities for us to be carried out over the next few months. These activities will be of progressive nature so that we can keep track of our own physical improvement. :)

The day's activity started off with some basic Pilates warm ups and work outs, such as roll-ups, rolling like a ball, saw, single-leg circles, chest lifts and the 100. (See http://pilates.about.com/od/pilatesmat/tp/BeginnerExercises.htm for some reference!)

YAs attempting the Pelvic Curl!

After the Pilates session, it was time for soccer! Firstly, Chelsea went through some of the basic techniques of soccer with us, such as passing, dribbling, goal-keeping and scoring.

Although most of us were not very familiar with soccer, it was heartening to see everyone try out the drills eagerly, even despite the intense afternoon heat and sun! After the drills, we also played a short match amongst ourselves after we were warmed up with the ball :)

Yan Shan as the goal keeper!

Ruo Rou putting in all her strength to attempt a goal!

An enthusiastic Lynette dribbling the ball. 😆

Lastly, we managed to rope the Guiders in to join us in our impromptu Captain's Ball game! It was definitely a great bonding activity for us and the Guiders, where we got to see another side of the Guiders outside serious discussions and work 😄

It was a very refreshing physical recreation for most of us as it was our first time attempting such exercises; we are definitely looking to see what's in store for us during the next physical recreation 集合!

25 July 2015 - Vision Day updates cum Museum Visit!

Hi all!

On 25 July 2015, we had two activities in one day - Vision day with the Guides and Alumni YAs, as well as our Museum Visits after that.

Update: The three sections of Dunman High Company (Guides, YAs and Alumni YAs) will be coming together on Vision Day each year from 2015 onwards after the handover process. In addition, Vision Day will now be held in July every year instead of January in order to facilitate long-term planning for the new leadership batch, ensuring a more holistic view of their term of leadership.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our museum visit was planned as part of our Arts & Cultural Development Programme, and consisted of visits to two different museums - the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum.

Here is a short recount of the trip by Ruo Rou:
On the 25th of July, we visited the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Arts Museum as part of our Arts and Cultural development.
At the National Museum of Singapore, we visited the “Singapura: 700 years” exhibition where we had the chance to experience Singapore’s transformation through the years from a small fishing village to the independent nation state it is today. We had a peer education system where the YAs researched on the different milestones of Singapore history and shared their knowledge with the rest. This exhibition served as a timely reminder for us on the contributions made by our forefathers and the hardships that Singapore has went through to achieve what she is today as we celebrate our 50 years of independence.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE
Excited us with our tickets before entering the exhibition rooms!

A prelude...

Rui Qi explaining her section on Ancient Singapore (around 1300s)
Us inquisitive kids :)
Yan Shan's turn to present!
The irony - Lynette smiling so brightly while explaining what was supposedly one of Singapore's darkest & bloodiest moments... (Though she definitely did a great job in her sharing)
Dark and gloomy mood of the museum to capture the tough times our pioneers faced...
Note: "Merdeka" = independence in Malay :)
Natalie going into all the details of Year 2 History - no doubt a history fanatic!
All attention placed on Natalie as she did her sharing~
Interesting to note: the lighting of the rooms got darker during the World War II period, but gradually became brighter and lighter as we progressed towards independence 😊

Our happy selves after visiting the exhibitions! Excitement level = 100%

At the Singapore Arts Museum, we visited the “After Utopia” exhibition which seeks to question us about our idea of a utopia, which refers to a society possessing near perfect qualities. Through the Asian contemporary art, we reflected on our mindset of how the world we have now is not enough and the pursuit of an ideal society which is simply unreal. In this exhibition, we learnt more about how to appreciate artworks and to decipher the meaning behind these artworks.

The visit to the 2 museums was certainly an eye-opener and a fulfilling experience as we managed to gain more knowledge in a more enjoyable and interesting manner.

22 July 2015 - Pioneering: Suspension Bridge

Hello!

Just a heads up, the YAs will be trying to complete NYAA Gold together for the next 18 months! Since we have decided to use Pioneering as our skills, we will be planning several pioneering sessions during our activities.

As such, on 22 July 2015, we had a pioneering session in which the 9 of us built a suspension bridge. This session was meant to act as a refresher on our lashes and anchorage skills as it has been a long time since we last did pioneering.

Wen Ting and Natalie working hard to transport the spars!
Yan Shan, Ruo Rou and Lynette enthusiastically tying the first lashes of the day!
Pioneering makes us happy :D

It was a very hot day and the sun was merciless, but that definitely did not deter us! Although we faced some difficulties along the way as we were not completely sure if the structure would hold, we were rather happy with our final product!

The end product!
Artistic shot of our bridge. Full credits to Chelsea for taking this shot!

It was a very fulfilling 集合 for us as we managed to recap on majority of our pioneering skills and lashes through this structure. This is just the beginning of a whole series of pioneering activities, so here's to many more pioneering sessions to come!

PDP 2015

Hello!

I am Rui Qi and this is my first post here as the Secretary of the 4th batch of Dunman High Chapter :)

After about 5 months of joining the chapter, it is now time for the 4th batch of YAs to step up to lead the chapter.

We had our Passing Down Parade (PDP) on 20th May, which started off with a passing down ceremony whereby the chapter stood in a horseshoe formation and each EXCO member passed down their role to the next batch of YAs. Similar to last year, we have 4 members in the EXCO this year.

Yin Ci standing in front of the horseshoe shape
Jaynell & Rui Qi - 3rd and 4th Batch Secretaries
Cheryl & Ruo Rou - 3rd and 4th Batch QMs + Treasurers
3rd and 4th Batch Vice-Chairpersons saluting to Yin Ci
Rhonda & Wen Ting - 3rd and 4th Batch Vice-Chairpersons
Natalie & Yin Ci - 4th and 3rd Batch Chairpersons
With all the Year 5s present :)
Last photo of the Year 6s in their uniform :'(
Missing Xi Ying & Ying Jie!

Chairperson - Yin Ci
Vice Chairperson - Rhonda
Quarter Mistress + Treasurer - Cheryl
Secretary - Jaynell

DHSYA 4th Batch EXCO
Chairperson - Natalie
Vice Chairperson - Wen Ting
Quarter Mistress + Treasurer - Ruo Rou
Secretary - Rui Qi

After the ceremony... both batches exchanged gifts with one another. Afterwhich, we proceeded with the games and passing down celebration which was planned by the Year 5s (namely our new Chairpersons Natalie and Wen Ting) for the Year 6s.

Firstly, the Year 5s performed a short skit for the Year 6s, summarising our experience as new YAs with the Year 6s welcoming and guiding us along.

Next, we were split into 2 groups to play a series of games! The games included:
1. Completing tasks such as dancing to Maboleh and Chek Chek and answering questions in order to piece together a puzzle picture of the Year 6 YAs
2. Answering basic OJ skills questions. For each wrong answer, the group would have to retrieve a sweet each from a plate of flour.
The games brought us back to our Guiding days and many of us were overwhelmed by bittersweet nostalgia :)
Shi Hui and Yeokmin having a Chek Chek dance battle!

We also sat in a circle to play the very same games that we played on the first 集合 the Year 5s joined as YAs, with a new forfeit implemented - the loser of each round would have her face painted with flour!

Yinci got her eyebrows dyed!
Then, we had KFC for dinner with a large dispenser full of Ribena, courtesy of the guiders :)

Finger Lickin' Good!
Group photo with our gifts! We hope all the seniors like the gifts we prepared!

To the 3rd Batch of YAs, thank you for all your dedication in leading the DHS chapter the past year. You are a group of very vibrant and warm seniors who never fail to inject laughter and joy into our activities; we will definitely miss y'all and may your passion for Guiding keep on burning!

Lastly, the 4th batch of YAs will continue to strive hard to bring the DHS chapter and coy to greater heights :)

Last Chapter Of Our Story...?

Hello everyone :)

Yesterday was the 2015 Passing Down Ceremony + Celebrations, which the new secretary will blog about in the next post! As this will be my last blog post as the 3rd batch Secretary of DHS Chapter, let us take a trip down memory lane and revisit the activities carried out by the 3rd batch of YAs since 2014 :)

Although there are only 5 of us who chose YAs as our first CCA and half of us are always unable to turn up for weekly Wednesday CCA sessions, I am really glad we decided to join back as YAs together. Time spent with the other 10 of you is always nothing short of amazing. 1.5 years have passed in the blink of an eye; together we have executed self-initiated activities, mentored the juniors, and most importantly had fun and created unforgettable memories.

I'm sure we all remember how we played games with the seniors during our first YA activity, how we wrapped Cheryl and Tsepuay in toilet roll, how we had so much fun splashing water at one another, and of course the steamboat dinner we had at Sukiya afterwards! That was a great start to our YA journey :)

Our first jihe in 2014!

I'm sure we all remember the day we went for the 2014 Induction and Annual General Meeting at HQ together! We met other YAs who got inducted together with us, and learnt more about the Young Adults system. This was also the day we were officially inducted as YAs and received our valuable YAs badge :)

I love how happy we always look when we're together <3

1st and 3rd batch of YAs

2nd and 3rd batch of YAs

Everyone's favourite photo at the Girl Guides HQ :)

I'm sure we all remember the 2014 Passing Down Ceremony, when the EXCO members received our roles. We all had great dreams and hopes for the chapter, and were beyond excited to start our term of service and of course do our best!

We are one big family <3

I'm sure we all remember the 46th Anniversary Campfire, which we were each a sub-committee I/C for. It was a great experience watching old guides gather together again to sing nostalgic campfire songs and relive memories, some even with their children. 20 years down the road, will we do that too? :)

Opening Ceremony under the Programme Committee :)

Gadgets committee!

It was a magical night!

I'm sure we all remember our first self-planned activity - gadgeting! And who could forget cheeky Yin Ci in the reclining chair? :)

Look how happy Yin Ci is!

I'm sure we all remember our very first Outdoor Cooking together. That was a really heartwarming dinner. It really is a blessing to be able to sit in a circle and share food you made yourselves straight from the wok with the people you love <3

With food and friends, who could be any happier?

We definitely poured much love into our food when we cooked together :)

I'm sure we all remember the highlight of 2015 - our annual YA camp! It was a short 2D1N camp but it was undoubtedly fun and memorable, and also a great start to the hectic year. Cooking a hearty dinner together, watching a midnight movie, sewing cute sock toys, playing ball games and not to forget making the structure on our batch tee come alive are just some of the memories I know we will always keep close to our heart <3

I'm sure we all remember welcoming our 9 lovely juniors into this small family, playing sports with them, having debates with them, celebrating Thinking Day with them, cooking with them, building structures with them and more. Really thankful for the bonding sessions we've had through our journey together :)

To the juniors, thank you all for being such a fun bunch to work with! All the best in your term of service and we're sure you will bring the chapter to greater heights in time to come. Most importantly, hope you all will continue to find joy in and put in your best effort in all that you do and never lose your guiding spirit :) May you all grow even closer to each other in the coming year and enjoy yourselves amidst the stressful JC life!

To the guiders, thank you very much for always supporting us and helping us in all that we do :) So grateful to have you all walk us through our entire guiding journey. Thank you for always welcoming us with your warm personalities and wide smiles, giving us invaluable advice and just being there for us!! We greatly appreciate you all, will always remember the lessons we've learnt and will miss you all so much! :)

And lastly, before I end, to my 10 batchmates, thank you so so so much for all the memories we've shared in the past 5.5 years. We've learnt so much and grown so much over the years, and it's heartwarming to see this good change in us. You all also taught me what it means to go through thick and thin together, and I'll always remember how we cheered at the top of our lungs even when going through the toughest physical training, and how we supported one another, from a simple "Jiayou!" to the other types of help we offered one another. This sisterhood is extremely special and I hope we will always cherish it. All the best for A levels and beyond, I know we'll get through these tough times together, just like how we've always done!

"There is no greater reward than working from your heart, and making a difference in the world"

This might be the end of our time in the chapter but I'm glad we started this journey together, and I hope we'll continue to do our best in striving for personal growth, bringing about positive change wherever we are, spreading joy and love to the people around us, and writing an even more exciting and fulfilling story together in the years to come.

Yours-in-Guiding,
Jaynell Seah
