3 February 2016 - Controversial Topics Discussion

After consecutive weeks of outdoor and physical activities, it was time for something less physical but more intellectual and mentally-stimulating - hence this week, the YAs had a rather intense discussion on some controversial topics!

The main topic of the day was on Abortion. Our IC, Lynette, first gave us some background information on abortion, in which we realised that abortion was not as simple and straightforward as we thought. After that, Lynette gave us another series of questions which eventually led us to the main question - Should abortion be legalised? Why or why not?

Each of us had our own individual thoughts on whether we thought abortion was morally right or wrong - some of us felt that it depended on the situation, such as the mother's socioeconomic status, or the circumstances in which she got the child, others felt that the mother should always take responsibility of the child no matter the circumstance, while the rest of us believed that the mother should always have the right to choose whether she wanted to keep the child or not. However, while we may have disagreed with one another, it was very interesting to see what others thought about this issue, and this definitely gave us insights into how we all had different ways of thinking and different beliefs that we hadn't shared with one another before.

Ultimately this activity gave us a chance to expose ourselves to multiple perspectives, and allowed us to learn about one another's thinking, and I believe that all the YAs would agree with me that it was definitely a very fruitful one!
